Last year the Board did vote on and pass a preliminary version
of goals for the Loaner Program. It included both beginner
(like try before you buy) and intermediate reasons. In this
context - a reasonable optic C8 does represent a reasonable
choice (at a good deal on the used market) for someone who
does not have a lot of cash and does not have the time to
do 'long distance" type observing trips. This is in my opinion,
and the expressed opions of several current and former
members of the Board. - We obviously do not need a lot of
these!
I was extermely surprised that the SJAA sold off the OTAs
of a class of beginner telescope - the short focus 80-90mm
refractor. There are no versions of this to try! I really would
have been willing to spend a bit - but cant' afford to try every
option of observing that is out there. These scopes are often
called "grab and go" (S&T, Akanna, and others).
Many of the intermediate and advanced telescope users in
the club have already expressed sentiments like Craig, and
JVN have recently reiterated. If the optic has been confirmed
as reasonable - we often have short term reasons for wanting
use of a telescope for a special project - or a short time. This
is exactly why we have a community - and the intermediate
part of the Loaner Program.
