I am glad that we have a quote from a reputable person.

As a person that increasing thinks like an accountant I always apply the
rule would you buy that today?  Sadly, as the Zambuto shows, a large measure
of nostalgia is injected into these discussions about the older equipment.
The stuff we can buy commercially now is really good.  That reduces the
value of some of the older optics to just the price of a blank even though
they were state of the art 15 or 20 years ago. 
 
The mechanicals and electronics on some of the older scopes are simply
wearing out (e.g. scope 9).
