Daystar scope - "a serious problem waiting to happen."
I'm not sure what Rich means - but there was an incident
where a borrower DID NOT put the energy rejection (i.e.
deep red) prefilter in front of the objective first. The
result was overheating of the etalon filter - and $$ damage.
This is not an issue of possible eye damage. The etalon
is buried in a metal sleeve and does not self-destruct
into glass shards (like a '60s department store scope
'solar filter'). It's not like a while-light filter that could
blow or be knocked off the front of a telescope.
Gluing the red filter with a bit of RTV would totally
eliminate this potential problem from happening
again.
But again- maybe there is a documented report of eye
damage from a Daystar filter??? (I didn't find any, Gordon
has been studing H-alpha questions since at least '04,
maybe he has info?) There are no recalls for Daystar
products from the US Consumer Products Safety
Commission.
