Hi all,
????We get a large number of inexpensive telescopes as donations.? Unfortunately it is a common occurrence.??A young person shows an interest in the stars and they get one of the department store refractors, try it out, get frustrated because they perform so poorly and the telescope becomes a permanent fixture in the closet.?
It is my opinion that as an astronomy group who interacts with the public we should recommend beginners buy a tabletop Dobsonian or short focus refractor with a decent field of view and at least one good quality wide field eyepiece so they can have success finding objects and not be frustrated with the awkward long tubes and low quality eyepieces with their tiny field of view.? We're lucky they don't lose interest after using one of those.
?To foster goodwill in the community I think we should graciously accept all donations, afterall they are given in the spirit of helping our cause.? If it is the desire of the club, I will be the keeper of the donations until the next meeting at which time we can decide what to do with it.?I will politely accept the donation and?show our appreciation. That way the public has a good feeling about the club.? That way we avoid rejecting anyone and possible hurt feelings.
?????????? Lee

I had already decided that the November motion needs to be revisited in
February. We seem to have this conversation every time a donation comes in.
Someone needs to take responsibility for non loaner donations.
I have made it clear it will not be me. I am already have 5 club scopes (or
scope carcasses) at the house already. My personal situation does not permit
any more storage.
