[SJAAboard] Data mining the auction sales

Gary already published a set of info that he gleaned from the figures. I
wanted to take a look at the numbers also to see if there was some
additional clarity.

					Contribution to
					Total
Sales with less than 100%	7.4%
Donation

Sales of SJAA property
(all sources) 92.6%

We got very little from sales of private goods. We certainly did not get
enough to justify running the auction. Sales of SJAA property and 100%
donations is where is got our money. This is consistent with past years.

Considering the source of the SJAA property was interesting. Breaking the
92.6% number down further we have (as percentage of total)

pre donation(from Lee) 44.6%
loaner 35.2%
at auction donation 3.8%
Orion 4.6%
book 4.4%

The donations managed by Lee were significant. However the 44.6% is mostly
derived from the donation of 3 scopes. These three scopes contributed 32.9%
of the total. The rest of the donated scopes contributed 11.6% or $380.
Assuming we have enough room to store the donations then this is worthwhile.
We also need to insure we can store returned loaner scopes as well.

HOW DOES THIS COMPARE WITH PAST AUCTIONS?

The auction program output (corrected for one data entry error) says we
received $ 3262.90 in donations this year. Gary's number is different since
people make donations at the time of checkout, but this number will allow a
comparison to past auctions.

http://www.sjaa.net/rh/Auction%20History.htm

Just to summarize this was the most money we have ever made from an auction.
The combination of the 3 largest scope donations, plus sales from the loaner
program contributed 68.1% of that record total.

WHAT WE CAN LEARN FROM THIS.

The first is that this year's results are likely a one time bump in
performance. I do not anticipate selling anything like the Compustar 11
next year. We might sell one or more C-8's but that is not certain.

The donation program being run by Lee was the major contributor to this
blowout year. Even the less desirable scopes brought in enough to pay for
Houge. This was the most we ever received from donations.

SJAA's median income from donations since 1986 has been about $521. Thus we
could be in a position of paying most of our income for Houge rental or have
a negative outcome.
