Star Party Commitments
-gee I thought I had sent this - but better to think over more!
>The following guidelines have been going through my head
>1. SJAA will not commit to any event where money is charged.
I don't particularly agree with this one. The particular example I know of
is the PAS picnic at Hidden Villa every year. In return for helping this
nonprofit put on an event (it charges per head) and using their 'edge-
of-an-urban-area' site the PAS gets a venue where they can hold
a very nice family style barbeque. Many in the PAS look forward
to this event every year. The public gets a nice, very large, star
party, and a non-profit involving families gets another good event
on their calender.
This exchange of resources - and the emphasis of the event on
astronomy, seem to make it an entirely different type of
event than a few telescopes being tacked on to another type
of event (that doesn't have too much interest from our members).
Villa Montalvo seems to fall clearly in the later category rather
than the former.
But I know another event we attend - where families are charged
at least $18 to attend. Yosemite! (chuckle). The venue is good
for us, and we do get free entry and camping for our members.
QED ?
> 1. SJAA will not commit to any event where money is charged,
other than a public park admission, without preapproval of the Board.
> 3. Any event that requires a contract or where monetary losses will occur
if
>we do not show requires the approval of the Board.
[Article 6 Sect 1 of Bylaws]
Item 3 is already covered by our existing Bylaws - but there is no harm in
mentioning it again in this context and there is some benefit.
