Basic Astronomy classes - or new members orientations

A few other clubs I have read about use different ways to make
new members feel individually appreciated and appreciated as a
group. Maybe we can think about what might work - or be
interesting to try with our club.
-- assign a Board member to every new member (for 6 mo. ?)
-- Have simple loaner scopes ready and waiting for assignment
to new members - after a basic observing class? - after showing
    up at a Star Party?
-- Have a special NEW OBSERVER corner of the Park every
month or two (staffed by old hands with funny hats, how about
a hat - in the shape of an "old hand")
-maybe combine last two ideas-

Some Special Visits, just for limited # club member signup
- behind the scenes at Chabot Space Science Center
- Lick Observatory - Planet Finder Instrumentation
  (mountain or UCSC Shops)
- Lick Observatory - general tour
- Visit to Tri-Valley's observing site behind Lick
- SJAA night at Fremont Peak - camp and get an
operator for the 30" scope. (non-public night)
- Visit to new observatory at Mt. Diablo State Park
     -group only, non-public night
- Observing with the 60" at Mt. Wilson (for fee - prepay)
- Challanger Center group space flight simulation
(Chabot - for fee - prepay)

Some of these I could organize myself. But any interest?
Other ideas we might float before the members in a comming
newsletter?

Steven
