Since Craig is not here I will chime in on what I expect he will say.

If you are proposing to only have a single color then that will not work
based on human factors.  The traffic light analogy works only because even
color blind people are used to the positional location of the "lights".

If you only have a single "light" then you can not be assured everyone can
distinguish the color. Thus you need placeholders for the lights that are
off.  Mark's colors are a darker version of the color when lit.
